Category: Ketek Information

As the first FDA-approved antibiotic of the ketolide class, Ketek or telithromycin is used to treat bacterial lung and sinus infections, including:

acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis; acute bacterial sinusitis; and community acquired pneumonia of mild to moderate severity, including pneumonia caused by resistant strep infections.

The following instructions from www.drugs.com indicate how Ketek should be administered to patients:

• Take Ketek exactly as your doctor has prescribed it for you. Do not use more of the medication than recommended. Do not take Ketek for longer than your doctor has prescribed. • Take each dose with a full glass (8 ounces) of water. • Ketek can be taken with or without food. • Ketek is usually taken once a day. Try to take Ketek at about the same time each day. Follow your doctor's instructions. • Take this medication for as many days as it has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated. Ketek will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu. • Store this medication at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Ketek is an antibiotic that has been associated with severe liver damage, failure and death. Symptoms of liver damage may include nausea, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, low fever, stomach pain and lost appetite. If you have experienced any symptoms associated with liver damage while taking Ketek, contact your doctor immediately.
