Iraq War Veteran Suffers Liver Disease on Ketek

Senator Grassley's Ketek Report Highly Critical of FDA
Category: Ketek News
Senator Charles Grassley, who has been investigating the FDA's clinical safety trials of the antibiotic drug Ketek, attempted to block the confirmation of Andrew Von Eschenbach as FDA commissioner last week. Grassley believes Von Eschenbach sought to impede his investigation into the the drug's trials. Ketek has been linked to fatal liver failure and possibly heart rhythm problems in some patients. According to Grassley, who spoke to the senate last week,
"The way the FDA under this nominee has handled the investigation of Ketek shows the agency would like to keep its business secret. It doesn't want these issues made public or subjected to the scrutiny."
Doug Greene, a doctor working for Sanofi-Aventis, the drug's manufacturer, insists the drug is safe enough for use, despite it's being on Public Citizen Health Watch's "Do Not Use" list since the summer of 2004. Ketek, which is also known as telithromycin, had $200 Million in sales in 2005.

Ketec is in a class of antibiotics known to be toxic to the liver. One must wonder why the original warnings for the medication did not make this clear.
